Type: Art & Antiques, For Sale - Private.

The West Loop ranges from Van Buren to Lake Street and from the Chicago River (say 500 West) to Ashland Ave. The eleven block stretch of Madison Avenue (Chicago River to Ashland Ave.) was known as Skid Row for decades until xxxx due its reputation for drug-dealing, alcohol abuse, prostitution, homeless people and flophouses. These conditions mostly stemmed from the area's proximity to the downtown railroad district (especially Union Station) and the need for mostly transient single men who worked for the railroads to live nearby inexpensively. The West Loop fit the bill perfectly, with its plentiful taverns, strip joints and Single Room Occupancy hotels, such as the Major Hotel, Union Hotel, Starr Hotel and Workingman's Palace. There were even a number of rundown manufacturing businesses in the area for those seeking employment other than the railroads.
The area's breaking point occurred immediately after World War 2 when disenfranchised servicemen suffering from varying degrees of PTSD with no support network and no families to go home to flooded the area until it became its own island of hopelessness.
Two milestone events heralded the beginning of the area's turnaround. First the transient men-only Starr Hotel met the wrecking ball around xxxx to make way for a prominent residential luxury high-rise named Presidential Towers at 617 W. Madison Street. A couple years later a relatively unknown woman named Oprah Winfrey opened large media studios in the heart of the neighborhood. Before long, other developers rushed in to snap up the extremely cheap properties with their excellent proximity to both Chicago's Loop and the United Center. Today the area thrives in prosperity.
