As our nation's largest city from the late xxxx's until xxxx, Philadelphia's social and political prominence eclipsed both Boston and New York City at that time.
Philly also served as our nation's (temporary) capital for about a decade as builders developed and constructed Washington D.C. Prominent Philadelphia citizen Benjamin Franklin helped to craft American ideals of liberty and democracy as one of the architects of the Declaration of Independence. Franklin was part of a five man team to draft and edit the document, along with Samuel Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Robert Livingston and Roger Sherman. In fact, Franklin had right of first refusal to be the lead writer, and he declined the honor. Samuel Adams also declined, so the lead writer fell to Jefferson.
Ultimately the full Continental Congress approved the document in Philadelphia.
Contemporary Philadelphia may be known as the City of Brotherly Love, but its sports fans can be merciless when they get riled. The legendary Santa Claus incident occurred in December xxxx when the Eagles played the Vikings in the final game of a dismal 2-12 season. The wind chill at game time approached zero degrees, yet 54,000 loyal fans showed up to watch their lousy team compete, because the city supports its sports teams. Dismayed fans found mounds of slush and snow on their seats when they arrived at the stadium. The halftime show featured Santa pageantry with Mr. Claus being pulled around the perimeter of the field on a giant float pulled by fiberglass reindeer, but the float quickly got stuck in the snow and mud, forcing Santa to traverse on foot instead, while a brass band played Here Comes Santa Claus. That is when the booing started, which quickly erupted into a thunderous chorus of loud boos. Someone in the upper deck hurled a snowball, then another, then dozens of others until finally hundreds of snowballs pelted Santa simultaneously near the south end zone. After the game Santa said "If there was no snow around, they probably would have thrown beer bottles". The media later attributed the incident the perfect storm of fans' frustration with the brutal weather plus the mechanical failure of Santa's sleigh plus a miserable Eagles team that season. Old Saint Nick luckily escaped serious injury, thus sparing both children (and believing adults) worldwide from the emotional trauma of witnessing Santa being carried off on a stretcher just before Christmas.
Diligence is the mother of good luck.-----Benjamin Franklin
